Rudy Gay and Jerry Rice (the audio)

Rudy was on the show to talk about being in the dunk contest this year. We talked about the contest and how the fans can help him out, the Grizzlies at the halfway point of the season, who talks the best trash, etc.

Jerry Rice also was on the show Tuesday. We talked about how he got into football, his playing days, teams, Montana, Young, the Super Bowl, leadership, work ethic, etc. The guy is a legend.

Monday, January 21, 2008

In addition to Jerry Rice...

The Grizzlies announced that Rudy Gay will be a participant in the All-Star Game festivities as a contestant in the dunk contest. Rudy is tentatively scheduled to join us on the show in the first hour Tuesday.
UPDATE: Confirmed, Rudy will be on the show in the first segment.

Jerry Rice on the show Tuesday

The list of guys that I really want to get on the show is getting shorter.
I have always wanted to get Jerry Rice on the show, and now we have made it happen. Jerry Rice, the greatest reciever of all-time and arguably the greatest player ever, will be on the show on Tuesday. Also on the show this week... SI's Jack McCallum and Gonzaga coach Mark Few.

Please tell me this is not true...

The local paper had the following statement on their blog... "And it appears that Stoudamire’s immediate future will more likely involve a buyout rather than a trade. The Griz have already turned down a trade involving Stoudamire because the deal would have left the 13-year veteran in an undesirable position. "

That is seriously the most preposterous thing that I could have read. The Grizzlies turned down getting something for the guy because it was not good for Damon? Please let that not be true. You would rather have Damon in a "favorable position" than do what is best for the Grizzlies? I am going to puke if that is true.

Pete Gillen on the show

Former Virginia coach and CSTV analyst Pete Gillen was on the show on Thursday. Gillen talked about the best teams in the country, the best player in the country, what players will be the best pros, the hardest place to play, sweating, Duke getting calls, etc. The guy is a gem.

Ernie Johnson and Chris Wallace on the show

"Inside the NBA" on TNT studio host Ernie Johnson was on the show on Wednesday to talk about hosting his show with Barkley and Kenny Smith. He talked about how the show works behind the scenes, why the chemistry is so good on the show, and and what he does the rest of the week. Ernie also talked about his battle with cancer and going through the treatments. This guy is such a class act, he was great.

Ernie Johnson on The Chris Vernon Show 1-15-08

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace joined us on the show for his weekly segment and I tried to convince him to let me take a look at trade proposals from other teams so I could decide if they are the "right deal" they always speak of. Maybe they will hire me for the new position that Wallace came up with for me. He also gave his answer for why the Grizz are 10-28.

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace on The Chris Vernon Show 1-15-08

Rich Eisen from the NFL Network and Pete Gillen from CSTV will be on the show tomorrow.

Something to behold

I have been to the vast majority of the Grizzlies home games since they have been in Memphis. I missed the 60 pt game that Kobe dropped at the Forum last year because the Tigers were playing in the Sweet 16 against Texas A&M... so I missed that one. With that being said, tonight was the most spectacular individual effort I have ever seen against the Grizzlies in a home game. Kobe dropped 56 in 3 qtrs a few years ago, but that was in LA. I remember Mashburn throwing a 50 spot on them, but that was an away game also. The Grizzlies lost, but what LeBron James did at the Forum tonight was something nobody in that arena will ever forget.

Hellga from American Gladiators on the show

Hellga from American Gladiators joined us on the show on Monday. We got the fascinating life story of Helga (Robin Coleman), from how she got the job, to bouncing for clubs in LA, to going on a date with Screech, to lifting cars. I wanted to do the interview as a goof because I dig the show and thought Hellga was a funny character, but in the end what we got was a really interesting person who has lived quite the life leading up to this point of becoming Hellga on American Gladiators. You just never know. Audio below.

HELLGA ON THE CHRIS VERNON SHOW 1-14-08

Also coming on the show this week... WVU Coach Bob Huggins, NBA on TNT's Ernie Johnson, Rich Eisen from NFL Network, Pete Gillen from CSTV.

New Memphis D Coor Tim Walton on the show

The Tigers named Tim Walton as their new defensive coordinator this week. We got him for his first radio interview in Memphis since his hiring. He sounds like exactly what they need on the staff. Who knows how it plays out, but in theory this is a perfect hire. A young, energetic, african-american coach with a good track record and ties to key recruiting areas. Sounds like a winner...

CVERNON.COM Exclusive: The Grizzlies roster spot (and how it will be filled)

This is hardly big news, but the roster spot vacated by Jeremy Richardson will be filled very soon.

The roster spot will be filled with Bobby Jones, not the golfer, who was released from the Denver Nuggets. Jones is regarded as a wing defender, which is what the Grizzlies need. Played college ball at Washington. He has not gotten a lot of run in the NBA. Let's hope he can help and we get a chance to see him play a little when he gets his 10-day.

Roser on the Street (Bum Trivia)

Last week we revealed the first of many new segments on the show. "Roser on the Street" went over better than we could have ever expected. The response to this segment was crazy. I have found a new way to get the audio directly on the site. Here is the first installment of Roser on the Street (Bum Trivia).

Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier will be on the show today.

Give me a break Damon Stoudamire

The Commercial Appeal reported today that Damon Stoudamire wants to be traded, or to have his contract bought out. The quotes from his agent are priceless...

"For the Grizzlies to demote Damon because of his age and because of the team’s record is unacceptable,” Goodwin said
hahahahahahahahahaha. hahahahahahahahaha. hahahahahahahaha. please, stop, I cannot take it. hahahahahahahahaha. Did he say that with a straight face? Is it ok if you are demoted if you are not that good anymore? Like him starting is not part of the reason the team has been garbage this year?

I also have a quote...

"I find the play of Damon Stoudamire to be unacceptable." -- Chris Vernon

Moving on, the fact that this guy is demanding a trade as soon as he didn't start is hilarious. I told you at the beginning of the season that the guy would start because a new coach could not afford to have Stoudamire unhappy in the locker room. He is one of the only guys in that locker room with cred around the league, and one of the only guys that the young guys could respect and look up to. They needed to keep him happy, so they tried to keep him happy. Despite the fact that he is nowhere near being a viable starting PG on a good team. He does not make other guys better, and he is nowhere close to being the scorer he once was. The Grizzlies tried to make it so the guy would be happy, so they gave him the starting job.

Then as soon as he doesn't start, here come the trade demands. It should be mentioned that they won the game by 18 pts. They won the game, and his agent thinks his demotion was unacceptable? Holy crap. Get rid of the headache now. They guy was fine, and professional, and blah blah blah, until he doesn't play and now he wants out. Give me a break. The guy should be forever grateful that an NBA team let him start at this point in his career. Hell, we had to watch the guy drag a leg around like he was in a potato sack race all of last year. He only started so he would not be a problem. Now he will be a problem. Roll him Chris Wallace.

2008 begins on 730 ESPN (come to the remote)

Remember... Geoff Calkins and Gary Parrish begin on Wednesday morning on the station. The show is from 7-9am. I know that they are planning to have some heavy hitter guests on the show this short week. Their show is gonna be great. Check it out.

2007 was an incredible year for the show. We were featured in every major publication in Memphis, on TV, internationally, everywhere. Sponsors came calling on us, and Lexus of Memphis bought the show. It was beyond any expectation I could have had. Thank you for everything that happened in 2007 and thank you for telling people about the show. All of that stuff happened because of your loyalty. Now the station is able to add a great morning show hosted by two guys I am friends with. I know they will be a breath of fresh air for every guy that wants to listen to local sports talk in the mornings. Tell everyone you know about Geoff and Gary being on 730 in the mornings.

I am starting off the new year on a remote Wednesday. I will be broadcasting the show live from TGI Friday's at Winchester and 385. If you are reading this, plan on getting out there and watching the Fiesta Bowl with us. We will be giving away Memphis bball tickets (including some to the Tennessee game) and other prizes. The new ESPN girls will be on hand, and it is going to be the greatest time you have ever had in your life.
